We at IFE understand that the new Horizon Europe funding programme can also be confusing \u2013 there are new requirements and areas of focus compared with Horizon 2020. Once you have read this short blog series you will understand what is new in Horizon Europe.<\/p><p><strong>Main Points<\/strong><\/p><p>The FAIR Data principle has been adopted into Horizon Europe and will underpin any proposal that involves data \u2013 so all proposals. Here is the low down:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Findable: <\/strong>The first step in (re)using data is to find them. Metadata and data should be easy to find for both humans and computers. Machine-readable metadata are essential for automatic discovery of datasets and services.<\/li><li><strong>Accessible: <\/strong>Once the user finds the required data, she\/he needs to know how they can be accessed, including authentication and authorisation.<\/li><li><strong>Interoperable: <\/strong>The data usually need to be integrated with other data. In addition, the data need to interoperate with applications or workflows for analysis, storage, and processing.<\/li><li><strong>Reusable: <\/strong>The ultimate goal of FAIR is to optimise the reuse of data. To achieve this, metadata and data should be well-described so that they can be replicated and\/or combined in different settings.<\/li><\/ul><p>Under Horizon Europe, the Commission ran a flexible pilot called the\u00a0<strong>Open Research Data Pilot<\/strong>\u00a0(ORD pilot). The\u00a0<strong>ORD pilot aimed<\/strong>\u00a0to improve and maximise access to and re-use of research data generated by Horizon 2020 projects and took into account the need to balance openness and protection of scientific information, commercialisation, and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), privacy concerns, security as well as data management and preservation questions.<\/p><p>Horizon Europe goes a few steps further:<\/p><ul><li>The open access rules have been extended to include more publications \u2013 for example books are now included.<\/li><li>Open access must now be immediate and the default<\/li><li>Research Data Management (RDM) costs are now eligible for funding<\/li><li>Increased emphasis on FAIR Data Management Plans<\/li><li>There is a new Open Access Publishing Platform called \u201cOpen Research Europe\u201d<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p><p>A practical conclusion for you today! The <a href=\"https:\/\/open-research-europe.ec.europa.eu\/\">Open Research Europe<\/a> platform is an open access publishing platform for the publication of research stemming from Horizon 2020 \/ Europe funding across all subject areas.
